Welcome to Prof. S. V. S. S. Narayana Raju YouTube
Channel.
In today’s UGC NET Hindi lecture, we are going to
study Sri Ramcharitmanas, Uttarkand, Pad 106, composed by the great saint-poet
Goswami Tulsidas.
In this important episode, Kakabhushundi narrates to
Garuda the profound teachings given to him by his compassionate Guru. The Guru
explains that the true fruit of devotion to Lord Shiva is the attainment of
unwavering devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Rama. He reminds his disciple
that even Lord Shiva and Brahma worship Sri Rama and therefore hostility
towards the Divine can never lead to peace or happiness.
However, blinded by pride, ego, crookedness and
false learning, Kakabhushundi fails to understand the noble advice of his Guru.
Instead of accepting the Guru’s guidance with humility, he develops resentment
and repeatedly acts against him. Tulsidas beautifully illustrates how knowledge
without humility can become dangerous, comparing it to feeding milk to a
poisonous serpent.
The passage also presents several striking moral
analogies. Smoke arises from fire, yet after becoming a cloud it may extinguish
the very fire from which it originated. Dust lies neglected on the road and
suffers the feet of everyone, but when carried by the wind it may rise and fall
upon the eyes and crowns of kings. Through these images, Goswami Tulsidas warns
against ingratitude, arrogance, association with wickedness and misuse of
status or knowledge.
The Pad further teaches that a wise person should
neither cultivate unnecessary conflict nor excessive intimacy with the wicked,
but should maintain a balanced and discerning attitude.
The climax comes when Kakabhushundi, while chanting
the name of Lord Shiva in a temple, refuses to rise and salute his Guru because
of arrogance. Although the compassionate Guru remains completely free from
anger, Lord Shiva cannot tolerate the grave offence of disrespect shown towards
the Guru.
Thus, Pad 106 highlights the timeless values of
Guru-bhakti, humility, gratitude, right conduct, self-discipline and freedom
from ego. It also reminds us that true education must develop character,
reverence and spiritual wisdom not merely intellectual pride.
This Pad is especially significant for UGC NET Hindi
students, as it combines poetic beauty, ethical philosophy, devotional thought,
symbolism and the Indian tradition of the sacred Guru - disciple relationship.
Let us now study the verses, their meanings,
literary features and philosophical significance in detail.
