Welcome to Prof. S. V. S. S. Narayana Raju YouTube Channel. In today’s UGC NET Hindi lecture, we are going to study Sri Ramcharitmanas, Uttarkand, Pad 104, composed by the great saint-poet Goswami Tulsidas.

In this significant passage, Tulsidas presents a profound philosophical explanation of the characteristics of the four Yugas - Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dvapara Yuga, and Kali Yuga through the influence of the three Gunas: Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas.

The poet explains that in Satya Yuga, purity, equality, spiritual wisdom, and serenity predominate because of the dominance of Sattva Guna. In Treta Yuga, Sattva remains strong but is accompanied by a certain degree of Rajas, encouraging righteous action and worldly responsibility. In Dvapara Yuga, Rajas becomes dominant, while Sattva decreases and Tamas begins to appear, producing a mixed state of joy, fear, activity, and uncertainty. In Kali Yuga, Tamas becomes predominant, Rajas remains in a smaller measure, and conflict, opposition, attachment, and moral decline spread throughout society.

However, Goswamy Tulsidas does not present human beings as helpless victims of their age. A wise person understands the nature of the Yuga, rejects unrighteous conduct, and consciously follows Dharma. Most importantly, the negative influence of time cannot overpower a person whose heart is deeply devoted to the lotus feet of Lord Sri Rama.

Through the beautiful metaphor of an actor and his performance, Tulsidas explains the nature of divine Maya. Just as the servant of a skilled actor understands the reality behind the various disguises and is not deceived by them, the sincere devotee of the Lord can transcend the illusions created by Maya.

The Pad gives the central spiritual message of the passage: the qualities and defects produced by Hari’s Maya cannot ultimately be overcome without devotion to God. Therefore, one should renounce selfish desires and worship Sri Rama with faith, love, and inner dedication.

The concluding lines also continue the autobiographical narration of Kakabhushundi. He recalls that he lived in Ayodhya for many years during Kali Yuga, but when a severe famine and difficult circumstances arose, he was compelled to leave Ayodhya and travel to another region.

Thus, Pad 104 combines the philosophy of the three Gunas, the nature of the four Yugas, the power of Maya, the importance of Dharma, and the supremacy of Rama Bhakti. For UGC NET Hindi students, this passage is particularly important for understanding Tulsidas’s philosophical vision, his concept of Bhakti, and the spiritual teachings embedded in the Uttarkand of Sri Ramcharitmanas.

Let us now study the verses carefully, understand their meaning, literary beauty, philosophical significance, and their relevance to human life.
