Welcome to Prof. S. V. S. S. Narayana Raju YouTube
Channel.
In today’s UGC NET Hindi lecture, we are going to
study Sri Ramcharitmanas, Uttarkand, Pad 108, composed by the great saint-poet
Goswami Tulsidas.
This Pad is especially significant because it
contains the celebrated Rudrashtakam, one of the most beautiful devotional
hymns dedicated to Lord Shiva. Through this profound stotra, Tulsidas presents
Lord Shiva as the supreme, all-pervading, formless, compassionate, and
transcendental reality who is beyond speech, thought, and worldly limitations.
The hymn begins with the memorable invocation,
“Namami Shamishana Nirvana Rupam”, offering salutations to Lord Shiva as the
embodiment of liberation, the all-pervading Brahman, and the very essence of
the Vedas. He is described as Nirguna, Nirvikalpa, Nirakara, and beyond all
desires, yet at the same time as the compassionate Lord who protects devotees
and destroys suffering.
The Rudrashtakam beautifully combines the Nirguna
and Saguna forms of Shiva. On the one hand, Shiva is presented as the formless
Absolute, beyond knowledge and speech; on the other, Tulsidas gives a vivid and
majestic description of his divine form his fair complexion like the snow-clad
Himalayas, the sacred Ganga flowing from his matted locks, the crescent moon
adorning his forehead, serpents around his neck, the blue throat, compassionate
face, tiger-skin garment, and trident in his hand.
The hymn also portrays Shiva as Mahakala, the
conqueror of time itself, the destroyer of ignorance and suffering, the source
of auspiciousness, and the giver of joy to noble and devoted souls.
A particularly important spiritual message appears
in the concluding verses: without devotion to the lotus feet of Lord Shiva,
true peace, happiness, and freedom from suffering cannot be attained. The
devotee humbly confesses that he does not know elaborate yoga, japa, or
ritualistic worship; he simply surrenders himself completely before Lord
Shambhu and prays for protection from the sufferings of birth, old age, and
worldly existence.
After the recitation of the Rudrashtakam, Lord Shiva
is pleased with the sincere devotion of the Brahmin Guru and asks him to seek a
boon. The Guru, instead of requesting any selfish reward, first asks for
unwavering devotion to the Lord and then compassionately prays for his disciple.
This is one of the most touching aspects of Pad 108.
Although the disciple had committed serious errors due to arrogance and
ignorance, the Guru does not seek punishment for him. Instead, he requests Lord
Shiva to transform the curse into a blessing and to shorten the period of
suffering. Through this episode, Tulsidas presents the true Guru as an
embodiment of compassion, forgiveness, selflessness, and spiritual
responsibility.
Therefore, Pad 108 teaches us several important
values: devotion, humility, surrender, Guru-bhakti, compassion, forgiveness,
spiritual transformation, and the harmony between Saguna and Nirguna worship.
For UGC NET Hindi aspirants, this Pad is
particularly important for understanding the Rudrashtakam, Shaiva devotion in
Sri Ramcharitmanas, the concept of Guru-Shishya relationship, Bhakti
philosophy, poetic imagery, and the synthesis of Indian spiritual traditions.
Let us now study Sri Ramcharitmanas, Uttarkand, Pad
108 in detail and understand the poetic beauty, philosophical depth, devotional
intensity, and timeless message of Goswami Tulsidas.
