Vibhishana’s Coronation and Lord Rama’s Praise of
the Vanara Warriors

students, scholars, researchers, and admirers of India’s rich spiritual and
literary heritage.
In this spiritually uplifting episode from Sri Ram
Charit Manas, Lanka Kand, Doha 106, Goswami Tulsidas beautifully describes the
coronation of Vibhishana as the King of Lanka and the gracious acknowledgement
of the heroic service rendered by Lord Rama’s devoted companions.
After the fall of Ravana, Vibhishana once again bows
humbly before Lord Sri Rama. The compassionate Lord then calls His younger
brother Lakshmana and instructs him to proceed to Lanka along with Sugriva,
Angada, Nala, Nila, Jambavan, and Hanuman to perform the coronation of
Vibhishana.
Lord Rama Himself does not enter the city because He
remains completely committed to the command of His father and the conditions of
His fourteen-year exile. This moment once again reveals the greatness of Rama
as Maryada Purushottama—the supreme embodiment of righteousness, duty,
discipline, and obedience.
Following the Lord’s command, Lakshmana and the
Vanara heroes enter Lanka, make all the necessary arrangements, respectfully
seat Vibhishana upon the royal throne, and ceremonially install him as the new
king. Having completed the coronation, they return with Vibhishana to Lord Rama
and bow reverently at His lotus feet.
The episode then reaches a deeply moving moment when
Lord Rama addresses the Vanara warriors with loving and nectar-like words. He
declares that it was through their courage, devotion, loyalty, and strength
that the mighty enemy was defeated and Vibhishana obtained the kingdom of Lanka.
Rather than claiming the victory for Himself, Lord
Rama gives the honour to His companions. This reflects one of the finest
principles of ideal leadership—a true leader shares success with the team,
recognises the contribution of every member, inspires them through
appreciation, and places collective achievement above personal glory.
Lord Rama further proclaims that the fame of these
devoted warriors will remain ever fresh in all the three worlds. He gives an
extraordinary spiritual assurance: those who lovingly sing the sacred glory of
His devotees together with His own divine fame will cross the boundless ocean
of worldly existence without difficulty.
Hearing these gracious words, the Vanara warriors
cannot feel satisfied enough. Overwhelmed with devotion, humility, and joy,
they repeatedly bow their heads and embrace the lotus feet of their beloved
Lord.
Thus, Pad 106 of Lanka Kand is not merely an account
of Vibhishana’s coronation. It is a profound lesson in righteous governance,
humility, gratitude, recognition of service, team leadership, devotion, and
divine grace. It teaches us that true greatness lies not only in achieving
victory, but also in honouring those who contributed to that victory.

मिलि जाहु बिभीषन साथा। सारेहु तिलक कहेउ रघुनाथा।।
पिता
बचन मैं नगर न आवउँ। आपु सरिस कपि अनुज पठावउँ॥
सब क्रिया-कर्म
करने के बाद विभीषण ने आकर पुनः सिर नवाया। तब कृपा के समुद्र श्रीराम जी ने छोटे
भाई लक्ष्मण जी को बुलाया। श्रीरघुनाथ जी ने कहा कि तुम, वानरराज सुग्रीव, अंगद, नल, नील, जाम्बवान् और मारुति सब नीतिनिपुण लोग
मिलकर विभीषण के साथ जाओ और उन्हें राजतिलक कर दो। पिता जी के वचनों के कारण मैं
नगर में नहीं आ सकता। पर अपने ही समान वानर और छोटे भाई को भेजता हूँ ॥ १-२ ॥
तुरत
चले कपि सुनि प्रभु बचना। कीन्ही जाइ तिलक की रचना ॥ सादर सिंहासन बैठारी। तिलक
सारि अस्तुति अनुसारी ॥
प्रभु
के वचन सुनकर वानर तुरंत चले और उन्होंने जाकर राजतिलक की सारी व्यवस्था की। आदर के
साथ विभीषण को सिंहासन पर बैठाकर राजतिलक किया और स्तुति की ॥ ३ ॥
जोरि
पानि सबहीं सिर नाए। सहित बिभीषन प्रभु पहिं आए॥
तब
रघुबीर बोलि कपि लीन्हे। कहि प्रिय बचन सुखी सब कीन्हे॥
सभी ने
हाथ जोड़कर उनको सिर नवाये। तदनन्तर विभीषण जी सहित सब प्रभु के पास आये। तब
श्रीरघुवीर ने वानरों को बुला लिया और प्रिय वचन कहकर सबको सुखी किया ॥ ४ ॥
छं०-
किए सुखी कहि बानी सुधा सम बल तुम्हारें रिपु हयो।
पायो
बिभीषन राज तिहुँ पुर जसु तुम्हारो नित नयो ॥
मोहि
सहित सुभ कीरति तुम्हारी परम प्रीति जो गाइहैं।
संसार
सिंधु अपार पार प्रयास बिनु नर पाइहैं ॥
भगवान्
ने अमृत के समान यह वाणी कहकर सबको सुखी किया कि तुम्हारे ही बल से यह प्रबल शत्रु
मारा गया और विभीषण ने राज्य पाया। इसके कारण तुम्हारा यश तीनों लोकों में नित्य
नया बना रहेगा। जो लोग मेरे सहित तुम्हारी शुभ कीर्ति को परम प्रेम के साथ गायेंगे
वे बिना ही परिश्रम इस अपार संसार सागर का पार पा जायँगे।
