Sri Ramcharitmanas – Lanka Kand, Pad 109
Goswami Tulsidas

Welcome to this spiritual and reflective journey through the Sri Ramcharitmanas of Goswami Tulsidas.

In Lanka Kand, Pad 109, we encounter one of the most profound and emotionally charged episodes of the Ramayana—the sacred ordeal of Sita and her emergence from the fire as the embodiment of purity, devotion, and unwavering faith.

Accepting the words of Lord Rama with complete composure, Sita asks Lakshmana to prepare the sacred fire. Lakshmana, overwhelmed with sorrow and unable to speak, obeys the command after understanding Rama’s intention. When the blazing fire appears before her, Sita shows neither fear nor hesitation. Instead, with complete confidence in the purity of her mind, words, and actions, she invokes Agni, the divine witness of all actions.

Sita declares that if she has never allowed anyone other than Sri Rama to occupy her heart, then the fire should become as cool and soothing to her as sandalwood.

Remembering Lord Rama, she enters the blazing flames with serene devotion.

Tulsidas transforms this dramatic moment into a powerful spiritual revelation. The fire does not harm Sita; rather, Agni himself appears and respectfully presents her before Sri Rama, affirming before the entire world her absolute purity and truthfulness.

The poet then offers a magnificent image of Rama and Sita together: Sri Rama, beautiful like a newly blossomed blue lotus, and Sita shining beside Him like a delicate golden lotus bud. Their divine union fills the heavens and the earth with joy.

The gods shower celestial flowers, heavenly drums resound across the sky, Kinnaras sing, divine maidens dance, and the entire army of bears and monkeys rejoices with the victorious cry:

“Victory to Sri Raghupati, the very essence of eternal bliss!”

This Pad is not merely a narration of an ancient event. It invites us to reflect upon truth, inner purity, steadfast faith, dignity in adversity, self-confidence, and complete surrender to the Divine. It also reveals an important dimension of the Indian Knowledge Tradition: truth ultimately needs no artificial ornament, because when tested by the fire of circumstances, genuine character emerges even more radiant.

Through Sita, we learn that true strength is often expressed not through aggression, but through inner conviction, moral courage, patience, and unwavering commitment to one’s values.

Let us now explore Lanka Kand, Pad 109, understand its poetic beauty, spiritual symbolism, philosophical depth, and its timeless message for personality development and righteous living.

Jai Siya Ram!
