Welcome to Prof. S. V. S. S. Narayana Raju YouTube Channel.

In today’s lecture, we explore Sri Ramcharitmanas, Bal Kand, Pad 79, composed by the great poet-saint Goswami Tulsidas. This Pad presents a very significant stage in the episode of Goddess Parvati’s steadfast devotion to Lord Shiva, where the Saptarishis test the depth of her faith and determination.

In order to examine Parvati’s devotion, the sages deliberately speak critically about Sage Narada and question the wisdom of following his advice. They refer to earlier episodes associated with Narada and suggest that those who accept his teachings often renounce worldly life. In this manner, they try to create doubt in Parvati’s mind regarding both her Guru’s guidance and her decision to accept Lord Shiva as her husband.

The sages then describe Lord Shiva from an outward, worldly perspective. They call attention to his ascetic appearance his detachment, unconventional dress, dwelling away from ordinary household life, association with serpents, and his life of renunciation. Through these provocative remarks, they ask Parvati what worldly happiness she could possibly expect from such a husband.

They even recall the earlier marriage of Lord Shiva and Sati, suggesting that the relationship ended tragically. Their intention, however, is not simply to criticize Shiva or Narada, but to test whether Parvati’s devotion is based on superficial attraction or on deep spiritual conviction.

This Pad therefore creates an important contrast between worldly judgment and spiritual understanding. What appears undesirable from an external perspective may possess profound inner greatness. Lord Shiva’s apparent simplicity, detachment, and unconventional form actually represent renunciation, transcendence, spiritual freedom, and supreme consciousness.

The passage also raises an important question: Can genuine faith remain firm when it is challenged by criticism, doubt, logic, and social opinion? Parvati’s response in the following verses reveals the extraordinary strength of her devotion, her loyalty to her Guru, and her unwavering commitment to Lord Shiva.

Through this lecture, we shall examine the literary beauty, dramatic irony, philosophical depth, devotional significance, character portrayal, and important points relevant to UGC NET Hindi examinations contained in Bal Kand, Pad 79.

Let us now enter the spiritual world of Goswami Tulsidas and understand how this remarkable episode teaches us the values of faith, Guru-bhakti, discernment, determination, and the ability to look beyond external appearances toward inner spiritual truth.
